Shane Dwyer Benefit

Posted by admin on February 16, 2015

Shane William Dwyer, a 2006 graduate of Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Preparatory, has been a proud Eaglet all his life.  Shane was a key member of the 2005 state championship hockey team and went on to be a captain his senior year in 2006.  While he’s always embodied the pride and virtues of an OLSM alum, these qualities began shining on December 19th, 2014, after being left paralyzed in a snowboarding accident in Northern Michigan.  After spending almost two months in the hospital, Shane has just completed his inpatient rehab at the Detroit Medical Center’s Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan.  Shane has been nothing short of an Eaglet throughout this trying time.  His iron will, positive spirit, and awesome determination as he completes his physical therapy is a testament to the man that he is.

As Shane puts it, “What I’ve lost in ability of body, I am fortunate to have in ability of mind and soul.  The best memories in my life have been spent sharing connections with family and friends, regardless of any activity at hand.  I have not lost the ability to continue this, and I am grateful for that.  Plus, I look forward to staying active in adaptive sports.  It will be a hectic year of “firsts” for me as I enter this new stage in my life.  I expect it will bring ups and downs, good days and bad, but in remembering your love and support, I WILL succeed.  I hope that through your support I can also inspire you in overcoming your personal challenges and accomplishing your goals.”

As you can see, his outlook despite his circumstances is one that is unmatched.  A study conducted by The University of Alabama National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that a paraplegic of Shane’s age has an estimated cost of $2.2 million dollars over their lifetime.  Shane’s family and a team of fellow Eaglets have teamed up with Hockey has Heart, a 501©(3) registered non-profit organization, to organize a charity auction to benefit Shane on March 21st, 2015, from 6:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Athletic Complex.

As an Eaglet, I ask you to support a fellow Eaglet in need by attending the event or contributing a tax-deductible monetary donation.  Event and donation information can be found at www.shanewill.com.  Shane’s spirits and attitude in facing this major life challenge have been nothing short of inspiring.
